The Minto Pyramid Principle® Textbook

The Minto Pyramid Principle: Logic in Writing, Thinking and Problem Solving (1996) explains both the concepts behind the pyramid principle and the practical application of it to a variety of document types. It contains 12 chapters and 3 appendices, and is organized into four parts. (NOTE: It supersedes The Pyramid Principle: Logic in Writing and Thinking (1987, reissued in London 2002), which consists of 9 chapters and 1 appendix.)

Part One explains the necessity to group and summarize ideas into a pyramid under a single idea directed at a single question, and shows you how to use that understanding to find your reader’s question and structure your ideas to answer it beginning with the SCQ Framework.

Part Two tells you how to look critically at the detail of your thinking, to make sure that the ideas you have included are both relevant and complete, and that your summary points actually reflect the insights inherent in the various idea groupings.

Part Three explains how to use a variety of analytical frameworks to structure your analysis at various stages in the problem-solving process, so that the results of the analysis can be in effect pre-organized to fit easily into a pyramid structure.

Part Four discusses techniques for making sure the pyramid structure is not lost on the reader as you transfer your ideas from the pyramid, either to written prose or to slides in an oral presentation.

The first of the three appendices deals with the differences between analytical and scientific problem solving, while the second gives examples of various common patterns employed in writing introductions. The final appendix presents a complete outline of the points made in the book, highlighting the major concepts and thinking techniques for easy recall.

The cost of the book is $125 plus postage and handling from New York.
